Hinemoana Baker at the National Library on 21 November

A woman with a ta moko, or tattoo, on her chin and is wearing glasses. She is looking at the cameraDon’t miss this chance to hear in person from renowned NZ poet, singer and performer, Hinemoana Baker!

The opportunity to spend six focused months of writing while living in Randell Cottage, Thorndon, has brought Hinemoana back from her current home in Germany, where she was Creative New Zealand Berlin Writer in Residence 2016. Her latest poetry collection is Funkhouse, which draws on the German meaning of the word ‘funken’ – to send a radio signal – and is described as ‘broadcasting unsettling songs of rebirth, love, friendship and alienation across homes and languages, to the living and to the dead’.  She’s now working on a collection called Exhaust World and will share the influences on her works in conversation and with readings.

Our programme includes the latest news from the French Embassy on its support for arts residencies in New Zealand under the umbrella of Villa Antipode. The French cultural counsellor will also launch a video from the most recent French laureate at Randell Cottage, travel writer Julien Blanc-Gras, talking about his Wellington experience, and announce the forthcoming French writer, due to arrive in early 2025.

Book the date in your calendar for Thursday 21 November with light refreshments from 5.15 pm and speakers from 6 to 7 pm in the comfort of the National Library auditorium.
